Poliphilo meets Candide

Marco Vomiero

This garden brings together the experiences of two literary characters. Poliphilo, the hero of a book from 1499, arrives on the island of Citèra. Candide, in the XVIIIth century, is directed by the author Voltaire on a search for the best possible world.

Project Team

Marco Vomiero is a landscape architecture student at the Berlin Polytechnic and freelance landscape designer. After a three-year degree in architecture in Venice he moved abroad, between Germany and France, to continue his training in landscape design. His goal: to learn this job in countries where it is more consolidated, and one day bring back to his country of origin the know- how acquired. His passion: meaningful gardens and the Mediterranean landscape.

Concept

This garden combines Poliphilo’s aesthetic experience with Candide’s ethical purpose. After passing through a ring of citrus fruit trees the visitor finds aromatic Mediterranean plants that provide the link between the circular form and the square seating area, creating a large sociable space, a sort of open-air literary café. In the centre of the garden, plants are cultivated in squared beds following a simple grid layout.
